Baby bok choy

This recipe is inspired by my trip to Hong Kong. I spent a semester studying in Sham Shui Po, one of the oldest parts of Hong Kong. Dim sum is very popular in China and was my go-to meal for lunch between classes. For those of you that don’t know, dim sum is Cantonese, and consists of small portions of food including dumplings of all varieties, Chinese vegetables, spring rolls, pork buns, and much more. Baby bok choy has become a favorite in our family whenever we go to a dim sum restaurant. If you are looking for great dim sum in Miami, Fl we highly recommend Tropical Chinese. This  restaurant has several little carts that go around the tables for you to choose what you want making it extremely fast and delicious. This recipe is our attempt at replicating their baby bok choy dish, and if you ask me it comes pretty close. Enjoy!



Baby Bok Choy
Serves 3 to 4 people

  1. 4 or 5 Baby Bok Choy
  2. 1 Tsp Sesame oil
  3. 1 Tsp Soy sauce
  4. 1 Garlic clove
  5. 1 Tbsp Corn starch
  1. Cut the bok choy into quarters or even eighths vertically.
  2. In a small pan add the sesame oil, bok choy, and minced garlic.
  3. Saute on medium heat for about 10 minutes.
  4. (you may add some regular vegetable oil as well if you see that they are starting to char)
  5. Mix the cornstarch with about 1/3 cup of water and add the the pan.
  6. Add the soy sauce and serve.
  1. This dish is best when served hot.

Red Pepper Jelly Cream Cheese Spread (Chismosa)


This recipe is a perfect substitute for the chips and salsa we all inevitably end up buying to entertain guests. Our family friend, Maria Celsa, showed us how easy it is to create this Red Pepper Jelly that is served with cream cheese and crackers. In Venezuela the dish is named “Chismosa” meaning gossip, as it would be the food of choice while the housewives sat around the kitchen table trading stories.

Pan de Jamon (Ham Bread)

This week we bring you a traditional Venezuelan Christmas bread. This simple recipe was created so that Pan de Jamon could be made in less than hour. While living in Ohio our aunt, Maria Helena, baked some crescent rolls with ham inside which spawned the idea of using Pillsbury Crescent Rolls as the dough for the Pan de Jamon. Plantain Cake

The plantain cake comes from our dad’s side of the family. Our great grandmother, Eva Acevedo, brought it from Maracaibo, a city in the western region of Venezuela. She then taught our grandmother, Haydee, and it quickly became one of our dad’s favorite recipes. He loved it so much that when our parents immigrated to the United States our mom was tasked with learning how to make it. Zucchini Frittata


This week our mom, Maria Luisa, sent us her Zucchini Frittata recipe. When she was a young girl her grandmother, our great grandmother, would make this dish for family outings to the beach in Venezuela. They would bring it along for their picnic lunches and usually eat it cold, but at our house it is usually served hot. Some members of the family have gone down a healthier path and made this frittata in the oven, but we choose to follow tradition and cook it in a skillet on the stove.

White Rice (Jasmine)


Rice, albeit a little plain most of the time, just needs the right twist to get everyone asking for it…and that’s exactly what happens at our house. Maria Luisa Tinoco, our mom, has been known as the “onion rice” master for as long as I remember, and its her that we have to be thankful for. Its very simple, easy to make, and definitely does not need to be done in a rice cooker or microwavable bag!
